How to Keep Your Harley's Tires in Top Condition During Winter Storage

Winterizing your motorcycle's tires, specifically your Harley-Davidson, can keep it in excellent shape for the riding season. The first thing you need to do to keep the tires in good condition is to wash your motorcycle thoroughly before storing it for winter. Clean your Harley to remove all accumulated grime, dirt, and road salt. Next, follow the tips below to properly store your Harley, protecting it from damage and corrosion.

Store Your Harley-Davidson Properly

Store your motorcycle in a cool, dry place during freezing temperatures to keep it in excellent shape. The best place to store motorcycle tires or your bike would be in the garage. We also recommend you invest in high-quality motorcycle stands to keep the Harley off the ground during cold temperatures and to help prevent flat tires. Keeping them off the ground also helps prevent flat spots. Don't forget to use the right motorcycle cover, designed to fully cover a bike with big engines.

Check Your Tires

In the winter months, make it a priority to inspect your tires for damage or leaks. Check the treads, sidewalls, and belts. If you suspect signs of damage or wear and tear, take your Harley to a dealership for service. Also, read the owner's manual on how to properly care for your Harley's tire. You should see information about the correct tire pressure for your Harley motorcycle.

Prep Your Harley's Exhaust Pipe

By prepping the motorcycle before winter storage, you can avoid corrosion, rust, and moisture buildup in its exhaust pipe. To do this, use an exhaust plug or a plastic bag to cover its opening. You may also spray the inside of the pipe with a rust inhibitor to avoid paying for expensive repairs during the riding season.

Take Care of the Battery

Connect the trickle charger into the battery terminals to avoid draining the battery. This will maintain an optimal charge and prevent it from dying when unused for extended periods. Doing this can keep your Harley in good condition and prevent you from buying a new set of batteries.

Don't Forget to Change the Oil

Old oil can contain moisture and dirt, damaging your Harley's engine. Using fresh oil can help extend the service life of your Harley-Davidson motorcycle and prevent engine problems. Check your manual for the recommended engine oil type for your Harley.
